Making Tortillas

We went out for breakfast this morning, it wasn't very good, and was surprisingly expensive...BUT, it was educational.    We learned how to make our own tortilla shells.   First you roll the flour into a ball.

Then you place the ball in between a folded sheet of thin plastic (I suppose you could use waxed paper).

TThen you close the home-made press down onto the ball of flour.

That's it...put your weight into it!!!

Voila!  (wait..that's French )  Aqui!!!! (that's better..Spanish, we are in Mexico after all)   A perfect round tortilla shell.     Place it on the grill, flip...and fill it with whatever suits your fancy.

Now all we have to do is find a couple of pieces of butcher block, make a handle, obtain some hinges and nuts and bolts, put it altogether and we are cooking with flour!!!

  2. Nice pics. I have made flour tortillas by rolling them out thin with a rolling pin or some other round cylindrical object. Fresh tortillas do taste great. Actually I hadn't heard of using a tortilla press on flour tortillas, only corn. But since it seems to work, I may just get a press and try it. As to recipes, I use a bit of baking powder and bacon grease or oil or butter as well as flour and water.

  3. I haven't asked anyone for there recipe yet, but I think it is pretty standard. I just googled it, and the first recipe I saw is; 4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    2 tablespoons lard
    1 1/2 cups water

Of course we would replace the baking powder with baking soda. Baking powder is 1/2 baking soda and 1/2 corn starch. Since Gerry has no problems with the flour tortillas in Mexico, I am assuming they don't use baking powder here.

  4. We have a tortilla press. We bought ours in Puerto Escondido for $65 pesos, it is made out of aluminium/metal, it is fairly heavy. Down here in Mexico though it is just cheaper for us to buy them as I have to have the corn ones which are super cheap anyways.
